Context<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I presented this PowerPoint in my first semester of graduate school in Dr. Fredlund\u2019s Research Methods and Methodologies course. My goal was to develop a cohesive presentation for a research methodology that I was unfamiliar with before the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultural-historical activity theory, or CHAT, is a methodology that stresses the importance of analyzing the connections between thought and action. More specifically, it is commonly used in modern research as a methodology for analyzing interactions between two or more cultures; researchers emphasize examining cultural interactions through the lenses of the individual cultures\u2019 beliefs, perceptions, and histories (Sannino, Engestr\u00f6m<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first half of the presentation, I focused on breaking down the history of the theory and how the generations of the theory evolved as researchers used CHAT for different purposes and in a variety of fields. Having visual models of CHAT helped my classmates understand the flexibility of the theory, as well as the nuances that were added over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lessons Learned & Future Plans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modern generation of CHAT is especially effective in pedagogical studies, as researchers in that field are particularly interested in examining academic cultural circles and related intra-communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This presentation contributes to contemporary fields by summarizing recent research that utilizes CHAT. Other researchers can see how this methodology was used in previous studies and determine its effectiveness for their own academic pursuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My expectation for this methodology is that it will be used by pedagogical researchers to analyze online classrooms and the social and cultural interactions within. Personally, I think that a thorough understanding of this theory can only be beneficial to my future work as a technical editor, as I will be prepared to consider cultural perceptions outside of my own and how they may or may not influence actions; after all, cultural sensitivity is a critical skill in all fields.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\nCHAT_Presentation-compressed_compressed<\/a>\n
